Introduction

Cornea Entertainment Studios was created during the course of Game Design and Graphic Design, both classes merge the students on the last assignment mixing undergrad students with grad students.

During the course of 5 weeks we created from scratch both the board game and the digital game simultaneously with the following mission:

Games for a Purpose: These should be games that are designed not just to entertain, but also to accomplish some end goal. In this case the client is an NGO whose goal is to develop new tools for the visually challenged. The studio needs to demonstrate the background research that informed their design choices (in particular grounding in the target application area and existing game-based efforts in this domain), and how they will know if they have achieved the impact they seek (evaluation strategies).

The team was provided with the head mounted display (Oculus Rift Development Kit 1).

Game Description

"Blind: The Maze" is a board game where you can play as the guide or as the person with visual impairment using the glasses while going through a dynamic maze that your partner (or you) cannot see.

The main purpose of this game is to leverage players communication and to learn how to deal with someone that does not see properly (or to experience not being able to see well). The blind draws and the guide has to guess which house objects is he drawing, the blind interacts with the board while the guide gives the instructions while using the cards and analyzing the maze.

Combining drawing challenges with a invisible moving maze this board game will push you to the limits through multitasking!

How to Play

The game is for 2-4 players. Each team has at least one blind person (the one that wears the glasses) and one guide. The blind draws the house objects and the guide has to guess, if you guess the object before the hourglass finishes you get the card! Some cards have special bonuses that you can use for your advantage. When a team reaches the Attic in the center of the board they have to complete the final challenge! Which is to draw two objects with the same time (30 seconds).

By throwing the dice the blind can move the token with the help of the guide, the guide cannot gesticulate and if the blind goes through a wall that team loses his turn (the token remains in the same square before "hitting" the wall).

When a token reaches a handle they have two options: To pass through the handle if they do not want to trigger it or they finish their turn with the token in the handle receiving a "free" card without having to complete the challenge, also, the blind can rotate the circular piece in any direction according to what his guide says. The handles in the square pieces allow you to rotate an adjacent circular piece. Square pieces cannot be rotated.

If a team finishes a turn with 5 cards on their hand they have to discard all of them into a pile, which means they have an extra attempt in a row in the final challenge. This way players have the option to use the cards or to keep them in order to complete the final challenge quicker.
