ProDy: Knowledge-Driven Profile Dynamics

Sponsors: Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT). Ministério da Educação e Ciência de Portugal. PTDC/CCI-COM/4464/2020

2021 - 2025

In this project we propose to formalize the creation, representation and dynamics of profiles in a Knowledge-Driven perspective. In particular, we aim to: (1) create a formal profile representation structure, based on the definition of a formal language that allows to: (a) clearly represent a user profile and its attributes. (b) describe properties and operations between the different items in a profile; (2) Define three types of change operations for profiles: (a) updating: it is the most common case, it happens as a consequence of the evolution of the individual or of his interaction with the system; (b) identification: given a change in a certain profile or set of profiles, this operation identifies the cause or causes that motivated that change; (c) targeted training: Given a profile and a goal (a particular new profile or a condition to be satisfied by a profile), this operation determines what are the processes (e.g. training) that must be carried out in order to achieve the goal. The proposed operators will be based on the theory of belief revision.

BRaNT: Belief Revision applied to Neurorehabilitation Therapy

Sponsors: Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT). Ministério da Educação e Ciência de Portugal. PTDC/CCI-COM/30990/2017

2018 - 2022

Cognitive deficits are common after brain injury, dementia and normal cognitive decline due to aging. These impact the performance of activities of daily living and limit people’s independence, with a high monetary and societal cost. Cognitive rehabilitation has been shown to be the most effective way to address this problem. However, current rehabilitation has some limitations: a) Rehabilitation tools are not adaptive, and may not be adequate for every patient. A suboptimal set of exercises limits the impact of rehabilitation and reduces engagement in rehabilitation. b) Interventions are time consuming and have a high cost, and are usually implemented in clinical environments. BRaNT is an interdisciplinary effort to create a new set of ICT for at home rehabilitation that addresses scientific limitations of current practices and provides solutions for the sustainability of health systems and contributes to the improvement of quality of life of patients.

Advanced belief change operations based on comparisons and conditionals: Towards a general framework.

Sponsors: German-Portuguese project. DAAD – Germany- Ministério da Ciência e do Ensino Superior. Governo de Portugal. German Co-Chairs: Hans Rott - Gabriele Kern Isberner

2019 - 2020

This project aims at developing a general framework of multiple belief change that is able to also take the credibility of information into regard, starting with total preorders as a commonly accepted base of change theory, and combining two methodologies of belief change that build upon total preorders to express knowledge: revision by comparison and c-change theory.

KBAI: Using AI theories in knowledge representation and automatic reasoning for more intelligent organizations and communities

Sponsors: Instituto de Desenvolvimento Regional, IP-RAM

2022 - 2023

The project aims to construct the KBAI Smart Ed product. It is an interaction tool with a dynamic and collaborative knowledge base, which is capable of rationally processing accumulated knowledge. Supported by a central platform, which can be hosted in the Cloud or on an internal server, through KBAI Smart Ed allows you to record and correlate knowledge on any topic and then question it.

MTL - Marítimo Training Lab

Sponsors: Programa ProCiência 14-20. FEDER

Chair: Élvio Rubio Gouveia

2019 - 2021

O Projeto pretende desenvolver um centro de treino de alto rendimento e performance no Marítimo, com capacidade para apoiar o Futebol profissional:
1. Monitorizar a resposta fisiológica no treino e na competição, para que de uma forma preventiva, seja possível controlar as sobrecargas e, consequentemente, a identificação precoce de desequilíbrios nos padrões de resposta que aumentam substancialmente o risco de lesão;

Research Groups

I am currently member of the following research groups:

NOVA-LINCS: The NOVA Laboratory for Computer Science and Informatics

The NOVA Laboratory for Computer Science and Informatics (NOVA LINCS) is a Portuguese leading research unit in the area of Computer Science and Engineering.
The mission of NOVA LINCS is to develop cutting edge scientific research in key areas of Computer Science and Informatics as defined by its strategic program, contribute to advanced education in the field, and share the produced knowledge, results, and innovation with users and communities within society. Towards consolidating its long-term objectives and its position as a reference research lab in its field, NOVA LINCS is committed to:
Sustaining the high profile international level of its research activities, fostering effective networking links with the relevant international and national scientific communities.
Promoting top quality post-graduate education in Computer Science and Informatics, contributing to consolidate an internationally competitive PhD level education at the host department.
Leveraging the results of its research activities in society, by pursuing and expanding existing partnerships and projects with companies and public institutions at the local, national, and international level.
This year we open Madeira N-LINCS, a new NOVA LINCS branch launched at Madeira University, led by me, researches within the lab knowledge-based systems and multimodal systems areas, with a focus on knowledge representation, neurorehab technologies and organizational engineering.

M-KRR-G: Madeira Group of Knowledge Representation and Reasoning

I am leding the The Madeira Group of Knowledge Representation and Reasoning. Is a group of the Madeira Island University (UMa) that investigates foundation and implementations of different areas of Knowledge Representation and Reasoning, in particular Logic of Theory Change / Belief Revision.
